Manipal
Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), formerly known as Manipal Engineering
College and affiliated to Karnataka University, was established in 1957
by Dr. T. M. A. Pai, at a time when there was an acute shortage of engineering
institutions in the Country.
As a result of the reorganisation of geographical boundaries of the
three universities in Karnataka during 1965, the Institute was later
affiliated to the University of Mysore and since 1980-1981 the Institute
was under the affiliation of Mangalore University. In 2000, M.I.T. became
a constituent institution of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education,
Manipal.
Manipal

Established as a co-operative venture, the Institute solely depended
on the munificence of parents. At present, the admission is open to
students all over India subjected to the admission rules of Government
of Karnataka. The Institute does not receive grants from any source.
The Sponsored candidates from Industries are also given admission under
Management quota as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India.
The Institute enjoys minority Institution status and its Management
vests with Dr. T. M. A. Pai Foundation, Manipal. A separate Governing
Council has been constituted for MIT by the Foundation.

Library
The Institute has an up-to-date Library housed in a separate newly extended
building with total area of about 70,000 Sq.Ft. The seating capacity is
about 800 i.e., 1/3 of the total strength can be accommodated at a time.
Library has got Technical books, Periodicals, Video-films, Indian Standards
and general magazines and other publications and is open to the staff
and regular students of the Institute and to others with the written permission
from the Principal. The Library consists of the following sections:

Lending
Section
Lending section is located in the ground floor of New Library Extension
Building. All books are stacked in the ground floor. The Technical books
are made available for home reading to the staff and regular students
of the Institute from this section. About one lakh books can be stacked
in this section and seating arrangement nearly 50-60 students has been
made. At a time two books will be issued to each student against his
or her Library Tickets during the week days by filling up in the prescribed
borrower's slip and presenting it to the library staff in the circulation
counter and on the production of identity card.
Reference Section
The reference sources like encyclopaedias, hand books, dictionaries
and general reference tools are kept for reference along with the main
stack in the ground floor of the new library extension building.
Periodicals Section
The Periodicals Section is located in the two Mezzanine floors of the
ground floor of New Library Extension Building. It provides seating
arrangement for about 50 students at a time. The Institute Library subscribes
for 383 journals (both Indian and Foreign). Latest issues of each of
the periodicals are displayed on the display rack. The loose issues
of periodicals and bound volumes are issued to, students and staff for
reference only but not for home reading.
Text Book Section
In order to enable students to study inside the Library, a Text Book
Section is separately maintained and is located in the Ist floor of
the New Library building. Arrangement for about 700 students has been
made including the 2nd floor of New Library Extension Building and l
st, 2nd and 3rd floor of the old building. This section maintains important
and prescribed text books in multiple copies useful for day to day class
work for reference. The books from this section are not lent out. The
Indian Standards are also maintained in this section for reference purpose.
Audio-Visual Section
As an aid to learning, the Library has Educational Video-films on the
topics related to Engineering and Technology with required equipments
for the Library user. Information Centre In order to provide the users,
information about the available library resources has the database developed
using CDS/ISIS software. The library has the plan to computerize other
library activities also. This centre has 'COMPENDEX PLUS'CD ROM (Compact
disc read only memory) Data Base which covers nearly 4500 journals,
reports, conference proceedings etc. published all over the world related
to Science, Engineering and Technology. This gives full bibliographic
information along with the abstract of the source indexed in the
Photocopying Section
It
covers 40 disciplines in Engineering and Technology
Two photocopying machines are installed in the photocopying section
at the right side of the ground floor of the Library. Both the staff
and students can make use of the photocopying facility against payment.

The library
subscribes to 13 leading news papers published in India to have current
knowledge of regional and national events. In addition to this, library
publishes a quarterly library publication "New Additions to MIT Central
Library". This gives the information about the new books, journals and
video films purchased by different departments and subject-wise addition
of books. This also provides a subject index for fast and easy location
of the required information.
N.C.C.
"National Cadet Corps" is a premier youth organisation which plays a
leading role in channelising the energies of the youth for Nation building
activities. It helps the students to exhibit and develop the leadership
qualities and helps to develop comradeship and spirit of adventure.
It also helps the students to have an insight into our Defence Organisation
and helps them to be easily recruited into our Defence Service. Most
of the Government as well as Private Limited Firms have agreed to give
preference for candidates having N.C.C. 'C' Certificates.
In our Institution we have a Company under the name 4 KAR. ENGR. COY
N.C.C. having the sanctioned strength of 150 cadets.
Hostels
Students who do not live with their parents or guardians duly recognised
by the Principal, shall reside in hostels or lodgings inspected and
approved by the Institute's Authorities. However the Principal has discretion
to refuse admission of a student to any hostel.
Admission
and Allotment of Rooms
- Every
student is required to stay in the Institute's Hostel at Manipal unless
the parent/guardian of the student concerned has applied in writing
that his ward should be permitted to stay outside. Students however
may be permitted to stay in the private houses of relations, or friends
or in their own lodges with the prior permission of the Principal
or if refused admission in any hostels according to the discretion
of the Principal.
- The
names of all the students admitted to the hostel will be entered in
a Register. The student shall sign the register kept in the Hostel
Office within a fortnight after his admission.
- Once
a student has been admitted to the hostel, he will not be permitted
to leave without a written application of his father or guardian and
without the permission of the Principal.
- Every
student when he is first admitted to the Institute and also subsequently
when he returns to Manipal after the summer vacation must fill in
the prescribed application form for allotment of a room in one of
the hostels. These forms may be obtained in the Institute's Office
or from the Hostel Clerk.
- Rooms
will be allotted by Wardens, taking into consideration the priority
of the applications, seniority in the course of studies, result of
the examination held earlier and such other criteria, at their discretion.
No allotment will be made to students who have not paid their Institution
fee and other fees. No student shall claim as a right any particular
room or seat in the hostel.
- Pending
the final allotment of rooms by the Warden the students may be permitted
to temporarily occupy any vacant seat in any of the hostel blocks.
Rooms thus occupied must be vacated soon after the permanent allotments
are notified.
- The
Principal or the Chief Warden may refuse admission to the hostel at
any time as a disciplinary measure.
- Students
must occupy only the rooms allotted to them by the Warden. They shall
not change over to any other room except with his written permission.
- All
students residing in the hostels are required to mess in one of the
attached messes, unless written permission in obtained from the Warden
to the contrary.
- Allotment
of a room made in favour of any student is subject to cancellation
if he fails to occupy it before the notified date. Students will also
forfeit their rooms if they fail to clear all their dues to the hostel
by the appointed day. In all such cases the seat may be allotted to
other deserving claimants.
Messes
Eight separate messes, Vegetarian and non-vegetarian, one cosmopolitan
mess are attached to the hostels. Each student must specify his preference
of the time of his admission to the hostel.Students will not generally
be permitted to change from one mess to another in the middle of a month.
Sports
and Recreation
These are organised under the auspices of the MIT Students Council,
an organisation run by students of the Institute to co-ordinate their
athletic, social and cultural life.
The MIT Students Council consists of an elected body with a President,
Secretary, Joint Secretary and Cultural Secretary along with Class Representatives
and Vice-President and Joint Secretaries of Sports Club, music and Fine
Arts Club, Secretary and Debating Club and Photography Club.
The Council will organise programmes and provide opportunities for recreation,
games and literary activities including the yearly magazine.The annual
athletic meet, tournaments, annual social gathering, periodical entertainment
programmes, concerts and other cultural and social functions form the
activities of the Council.
Outdoor playgrounds for football, hockey, cricket, tennis, basket ball
and volley ball are available for use. A swimming pool for the MIT is
also now available. The Institute has well-equipped indoor games rooms
providing for badminton, table tennis, chess, carrom and a good gymnasium.
It fosters various clubs also like the Music and Fine Arts Club, Photographic
Club, Literary and Debating Club, Philatelic Club, Hobbies Club etc.
Technical Associations for each branch of Engineering are also instituted
with the students of a particular branch becoming members of the respective
association automatically. Each of these clubs and associations will
have a nominated staff member as chairman, a student secretary, a joint
secretary and treasurer.
